Handrail Dimming

Dimming may be required for a number of reasons. For interior spaces it is useful to control light levels, changing the ambient intensity throughout the day. For external installations, reducing lighting levels as darkness draws in to protect nocturnal wildlife.

There are different types of dimming, some are more suited to Constant Current Circuits especially in domestic handrail installations.

Dimming Types

PWM –  Pulse Width Modulation. A digital control system used for motor control and dimming  our Dc-Dc Converters
DALI – Digital Addressable Lighting Interface. Digital protocol addressing individual light fittings from a central control system.
DMX – Digital Matrix. Similar to DALI, used more in the entertainment industry
Triac – The more familiar rotary dimming control used in homes.

Constant Current Circuits

Unquestionably, this is the easiest type of circuit for Handrail Dimming, simply install a driver that is compatible with the system. For domestic and small project installations the familiar Triac rotary dimmer is a cost-effective solution.

Constant Voltage Circuits 24v Dc

This is the most common type of handrail installation and is a little more complicated. In order to operate our Projectors at 24 volts Dc, it is essential to use Dc-Dc converters in the circuit. These devices can be dimmed using a PWM signal and require an additional wire to be run in the handrail and connected to the control box. It is also necessary to add an interface that will convert the incoming DALI/ DMX signal to PWM.

Triac dimming is not an option

Handrail Switching

Handrail switching can be more sophisticated and autonomous than the humble switch. All of these can be built into the control gear enclosure

Switch Types

Photocell – Switches lighting in relation to Sunlight
PIR – Passive Infra-Red sensor. Detects movement in proximity to its position
Time Clock – Conventional electromechanical timer
Astro Timer – Astronomical Time Switch with built-in Geo Locator for precise switching according to calendar

In addition, PWM / DALI and DMX can switch remotely
