Retrofitting LED Handrail lighting is an effective way of illuminating walkways and stairs using existing stock without costly and wasteful replacement. In so many cases, external paths and steps are illuminated from above by a floodlight, spreading light in all directions. Handrail lighting offers pedestrian comfort, providing lower light levels where light is needed at ground level. The handrail tube makes the perfect conduit, and with our tube clamp and PRO hole drilling machine, apertures for our projectors can be bored quickly and efficiently. Installing our Wiring Loom further reduces installation time and offers incredibly long distances from a single point, possibly from one of the existing lighting positions. Considering how little power our typical installations consume, autonomous Solar power is also a real possibility.
What are the benefits of retrofit handrail lighting?
Externally illuminated handrail installations provide safe illumination for pedestrians on walkways, footpaths and especially steps, highlighting level changes and hazards. Handrail lighting is ideal for emergency lighting.
Furthermore, the focused, downlighting nature of handrail lighting significantly reduces light pollution, and seeing the stars at night is a bonus; the main reason is to protect biodiversity - nocturnal wildlife. Night creatures like bats, moths, frogs and hedgehogs have evolved with the brightest element in the night sky - a full moon (around 0.1 lux). Whilst we need a little more than that (upwards of 3 lux), using our projectors focuses light onto the surface without spilling into the surroundings, keeping wildlife in the dark.
Tube Drilling Jig
Our Tube Clamping Jig has been custom-designed for ease of use and to provide a secure grip without damaging the handrail. Machined from solid Aluminium for extra strength with reduced weight.
The two jaws feature replaceable Nitrile rubber inserts that offer a soft face to the tube without deforming. This means that high clamping forces can be applied repetitively.
The upper jaws are shaped to allow the assembly to be used where handrails are installed against a wall.
The lower retention bracket allows for the drilling machine assembly to slide on. The details are symmetrical so that drilling can be left or right of the jig.
The drilling machine is a modified Rotabroach Element 40. The magnetic base has been removed and replaced with our jig mating bracket. The bracket can be supplied as a blank to enable alternative mag drills to be used with this retrofit handrail lighting jig.

Box Profile Drilling Jigs
We offer two Clamping Jigs for drilling the vertical face of box section profiles 80 x 40mm and 100 x 50mm.
Each jig features a front quick clamp and two bolted clamps to the rear for secure fixing.
A separate EPDM shroud protects the handrail finish, ensuring the original finish is not damaged during drilling.
The drill retention bracket allows the drilling machine assembly to slide on. The details are symmetrical so that drilling can be done to the left or right of the jig. This item is common to all types of jigs.
The TCT cutter creates a clean, accurate hole ready for deburring.

Yes, the jig is available separately with a blank holding bracket to be drilled to suit your machine.
